The Colour in Design Award

The Colour in Design Award is an initiative by Marianne Shillingford Creative Director of Dulux. It has been created to recognise and reward outstanding use of colour in design by young designers at the beginning of their creative careers.

3,000 of the most promising graduate talents from the UK's leading design courses exhibit at the event. The show features creative skills from illustration to animation, furniture to fashion, and gaming to glass and takes place at the Business Design Centre in London. It provokes fresh thinking and kick-starts careers, providing a pipeline of young talent into one of the UK's leading sectors of industry. Nowhere else is it possible to see such innovation and creativity across all disciplines, and the content is completely new every year.

The Colour in Design Award is sponsored by Marianne Shillingford, Creative Director of Dulux. Dulux will be providing support for the prizewinners in terms of industry experience and training alongside the colour and marketing teams and Marianne will be funding the award and providing mentoring and support throughout the year

Dulux will have the opportunity to deliver core messages about leadership in colour at the ND event and promote the award plus credits for Dulux will be included in the programme guide and on the ND website.

The Judging criteria

Recipients of the award must: * Show outstanding and innovative use of colour within their work * Demonstrate a high level of skill in the execution of their work * Demonstrate an understanding of its potential within a specific market * Demonstrate drive, passion and professional ambition for their creativity within the industry * Knock the judges socks off

The Judges

Judges for the awards are highly respected industry experts who have been chosen for their experience, knowledge and success within the industry. Most of them are past New Designers Alumni. All of them have donated their time and expertise for free.

Clarissa Hulce

Clarissa Hulce is one of Britain's leading textile designers who has evolved her brand to be one of the most respected in the UK textile industry. Clarissa was born in Prague, and lived in many countries growing up including Spain, Italy, Greece and even Thailand. She cites this as a driving force behind her love of vivid colour and natural design which is evident though her collections. She will be a well-known design celebrity at the ND show.

Kit Miles

Kit is a past winner of a Dulux Lets Colour Award and past alumni/award winner of New Designers. He is the perfect example of what a little support and mentoring can do at a critical time in a young designers' life. Kit is a multi-award winning designer and he now runs a highly successful design studio with a worldwide reputation that continues to grow.

Daniel Heath

Daniel Heath is a British award winning independent wallpaper, textile and surface designer renowned for his illustrative and engaging designs. Daniel is an experienced academic and has lectured Textiles at a range of universities, including Loughborough, Manchester, Bournemouth, Staffordshire, Bucks New University and Central St Martins and also provides mentoring for young designers through the Crafts Council Hot House scheme. Daniel is also a proud brother of the Artworkers' Guild, London.

Rebecca Williamson - Senior Colour and Design Manager Dulux

Rebecca Williamson is the UK colour expert for Dulux with a background in textile design - and is also a New Designers Alumni. She has a deep understanding of the commercial potential for colour and encourages graduates to succeed within the industry through internship placement within her colour team.

The Colour in Design Award - what does the winner get?

There will be a physical award designed and made by a past New Designers alumni. This will be different every year and its design and manufacture will be recorded on the website and social media channels. @colourindesign #ColourInDesignAward

The winner will receive £1,000 plus a year of mentoring and support from Marianne Shillingford. Dulux and the judges will also provide support and work experience for the winner so that they get the fullest and richest experience and an excellent kick start to their career in the creative industry.

The Colour in Design Award will have its own website which will follow the story of the winners plus runners up and New Designers and established designers who are working in the field of colour. It will also provide a knowledge and resource hub for designers working with colour in the creative industry - the website: www.colourindesign.org is currently under construction but should be live following the event.

Judges will also be able to recognise great use of colour by more than one designer during the judging process by handing out a number of branded badges and details of the award and its objectives will be included in a printed flyer that will be put in 1,700 ND free goodie bags.
