3 Ways To Rethink Trim

3 Ways To Rethink Trim

It's probably true to say that trim has traditionally been one of the most neglected areas when it comes to decorating schemes. Often, trim is either painted in white or even left untouched when rooms are redecorated. But this is no longer the case! There's a growing trend for turning woodwork and trim into a design statement by highlighting these architectural details through colour. So get up to speed on the latest way to treat trim and help your clients' reimagine their spaces. These three schools have eschewed white gloss for something a little more uplifting and inspiring for its pupils, staff and visitors. After all, why should walls have all the fun?

Kathleen Grimm School for Leadership and Sustainability, Staten Island, NY

This primary school on Staten Island has made headlines in the industry because it's the first public school to generate as much energy as it uses on site, but its design details are equally newsworthy. Designed by SOM architects, the building features brightly coloured window frames that punctuate the concrete facade. Inside, interior window frames have been given the same vibrant treatment, transforming a commonplace architectural detail into an eye-catching statement.

Rosemary Works School, London

A winner of the Dulux Let's Colour Awards 2015, Rosemary Works school is the vision of London-based architects Aberrant Architecture. They were tasked with bringing an Edwardian school up to date with a limited budget. One of the devices they used to create impact within the budget was the use of colour. Every room was given a different scheme, utilising every surface with bold, saturated hues - including trim. The results amazed the pupils and teachers, who embraced the new look and feel of their school.

Primary School by DEGW, London

This redesign of Victorian school in London by agency DEGW was part of a pilot scheme that aims to increase pupils' readiness to learn through promoting personalised learning. To reflect this approach, the school's spaces are designed to enhance a collaborative learning, incorporating bold blocks of colour and banquette seating to break up open spaces. This colourful and contemporary look has been applied to the period details too, such as the original Victorian doors and woodwork.
