How are we doing more with less

As well as helping you reduce your environmental footprint, we’re also working hard to reduce our own and leading the industry into a brighter, more sustainable future. Here's how we're putting it into action.

Topping the rankings

Over the last 11 years we have been in ranked first or second ten times on the independent Dow Jones Sustainability Index, which measures the sustainability performance of leading companies by looking at key criteria such as how we manage our supply chain, environmental performance of our operations and how we manage health and safety.

Creating safer products

We apply one set of safety standards globally to all our products, which means our standards are consistently high and we’re often one step ahead of product legislation and innovation. For example, we sell strictly lead-free coatings throughout the world, and in India we’ve removed potentially harmful raw materials – that our competitors continue to use – from our products. Whatever the product, we also make sure it meets all the guidelines set by EU regulation and the Coatings Care programme, which seeks to improve health and safety standards, and environmental standards, for all.

Using resources more efficiently

We're improving how efficiently we use our resources by lowering the environmental impact of how we make our products. How we reduce… Energy In 80 plants around the world, from 2009 to 2016 we made a 35% reduction in our global energy use per tonne of production, simply by changing the way we use equipment such as lighting, boilers and compressors. We have set ourselves an ambition to use 100% renewable energy globally by 2050. Water To reduce our water consumption, we’ve installed Rainwater Harvesting Systems at many of our factories around the world, such as one of our largest factories at Maua in Brazil. Waste By introducing innovative ways of working, we’ve cut our waste per tonne of production by 32% in 2016 compared to 2012, and we aim to reduce it again by a further 23% by 2020.

Building partnerships to do even more

By working with suppliers of raw materials whose working practices meet our own social and environmental standards, we can be sure we're one step closer to meeting our sustainability goals. We also partner with key organisations to keep up to date with the latest developments.
