Why did you choose a career in painting and decorating?
My family all worked in office-based jobs but I wanted to do something where I could move around and see different places every day. I tried out a few roles but they didn't work out, then when my mum and dad had their house decorated, I got talking to the subcontractors and discovered they were looking for an apprentice. They ended up taking me on for two years, and that's how I got started.
How long have you been in the business?
27 years in total.
Do you work as a sole trader or for a company?
I've worked as a sole trader since 1990.
What project would you say was your most memorable?
Each one is unique and different from the last one and you always want to give it your best, so in that sense, they're all memorable.
What is the best thing about your job?
The customer satisfaction at the end of a project. It's nice to put a smile on people's faces and if you do a good job then people tend to use you again next time and recommend you to friends.
What is the worst thing about your job?
The rain! It messes up our schedule for external work whatever the time of year, and things can get delayed for weeks if it's a very wet period. A lot of decorators choose not to do external work for that reason.
What are your top tips for someone just starting in the industry?
Never forget that you're in someone's home when you're on a job. Leave things clean and tidy, with minimal disruption to the customer. If you can go the extra mile and make sure they're comfortable and happy with having you in their home then that will make a big difference to their overall satisfaction.
