8 Tips for Using HVLP Systems

HVLP systems

High-volume low-pressure spray (HVLP) systems are ideally suited to small, fiddly projects in intricate environments such as trim, staircase spindles, cabinets, furniture, kitchen units and cornices.

There are several common problems tradesmen come up against when using HVLP systems, so our Dulux Academy team have shared their tips to help you overcome these frustrations and get a great finish for your customer:

1. When choosing which HVLP system to buy, a general rule is buy the best you can afford, as you do get more for your money. Systems are differentiated by which 'stage' they are, which relates to how many times the air is channeled through a fan to create pressure. Trade machines start at three stage up to five stage, and the more pressure you have, the greater the range and thickness of products you can spray. The Dulux Decorator Centre has its own brand, Q-tech, and also sell Graco units - both of which are considered to be some of the best manufacturers in the market.

2. Use waterborne products instead of solvent-borne products.

3. Use the best quality tape you can afford as using poor quality masking tape will allow the paint to bleed under the edge, or won't adhere properly to your surface.

4. Make sure you don't over-apply the paint, or you'll get runs in the paint film. Also check your paint is at the right consistency to avoid run marks.

5. Make sure you use the correct size needle for the thickness of your product.

6. Ensure the area is clean as you don't want to blow dust into the air and onto your wet paint, especially skirtings.

7. Always wear the appropriate respirator or spray mask and ensure you have good ventilation.

8. Attend one of our Dulux Academy courses to polish your technique - practice makes perfect after all.
