No more Health and Safety rules for Painters and Decorators

The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) has launched a review that could see self-employed people exempted from health and safety rules. With many painters and decorators working as their own boss, the outcome of the review could be important for the sector.

The HSE proposals follow the recommendations of a recent Government report, by Professor Löfstedt, to relax health and safety red tape for self-employed people. The HSE's proposals state that all such individuals should be excused from the rules as long as their business isn't in a sector that is officially listed as high-risk and its activities don't pose a risk to others.

The HSE is inviting responses to its proposals until the 28th October. The exact types of companies that will eventually be freed up from health and safety red tape will depend on the feedback the HSE gets, and how the Government reacts to this public response.

So, if you want to make sure the painting and decorating industry's voice is heard, visit the HSE website and download a response form.
