Why did you choose a career in painting and decorating?
I was sent by my local careers office at the time to sample various working environments. Having tried my hand at estate agency and being a motor engineer I finally decided that decorating was the career I was more suited to. I got on well, stuck with it, and here I am 18 years later!
How long have you been in the business?
I've been in the decorating business for 18 years.
What is the best thing about your job?
The best thing about my job is meeting new people and transforming their homes - because everyone deserves a nice home. In turn, I like to think I help to transform lives.
What do you think makes you the Ultimate Professional?
I won't leave a job until I am truly satisfied that it looks its best. I have a good eye for what a quality, finished article should look like. Why should any decorator expect a client to settle for less?
If you could give one piece of advice to someone just starting out in the industry, what would it be?
My advice for anyone starting out is this: focus on a good quality finish no matter how long it takes, as the speed will come later. With our apprentices at AJM Decorating, I advise them to take time completing a task until it is to a standard where they and I are both happy, and doesn't have to be corrected later.
